How to Change Your SASSA Banking Details
Follow these steps to update your banking information and ensure your payments are sent to the correct account.
- Access the Website: Go to the official SASSA SRD website.
- Enter ID: Find the “Change Banking Details” section and enter your South African ID number.
- Receive SMS: You will receive a secure SMS link to your registered mobile number.
- Open the Link: Click the unique link from the SMS. It will take you to a secure portal.
- Enter Details: Follow the prompts to enter your new bank account information.
- You can choose a bank account or a Postbank option.
- Verify: After submitting, the new details will undergo a verification process.
- This can take some time. Once verified, your grant payments will be sent to the new account.
Note: Your new bank account must be in your name as per the official SASSA records. SASSA cannot pay grants into a third-party account.
What ‘SASSA Banking Details Pending’ Means
A ‘Banking Details Pending’ status means SASSA has received your application but does not have a valid bank account to pay your grant into. This status is common for new applicants or those who have recently changed their banking details.
What to Do:
- Submit Details: If you have not submitted your details, do so immediately using the steps above.
- Check for Errors: If you have already submitted details, there might be a small error (e.g., incorrect ID number, name mismatch with the bank account).
- Be Patient: The verification process can take time. Avoid re-submitting your details multiple times as this can cause delays. Wait a few days to a week for the status to change.
A ‘Bank Details Pending’ status must be resolved before any approved payments can be made.
SASSA ‘Awaiting Identity Verification’
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) performs identity verification to confirm you are who you say you are. This process links your application details to your official record at the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). It’s an important step to prevent fraud and ensure only eligible citizens receive grants.
Why Identity Verification Fails
An “Identity Verification Failed” status means the information you provided to SASSA does not match the records with the DHA. This can happen for several reasons:
- Mismatched Personal Details: Your name, surname, or ID number on the application differs from what is on your official ID.
- Outdated Information: Your details with the DHA may be outdated due to a name change or other personal status change.
- ID Book vs. Smart Card: For some verification methods, having an old green ID book may cause issues with the system’s ability to get a clear image.
- Typos: Simple errors like a misspelled name or an incorrect digit in your ID number will cause a failure.
How to Fix a Failed Identity Check
If your status shows “Identity Verification Failed,” you must take action to get it resolved. Failure to do so can result in your grant remaining suspended.
- Check Your Details: First, confirm that the ID number and name you entered on your application are 100% correct.
- Lodge an Appeal: You must appeal a declined application to have your case reviewed. The appeal will be handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). You can appeal against your application here. When you appeal, be prepared to submit documents that prove your identity and address the reason for the decline.
- Biometric Verification: In some cases, SASSA may require you to complete a biometric verification, which involves fingerprint or facial recognition checks. This is usually done at a SASSA office or a partner retail outlet and is required to unlock your account.
- Contact Home Affairs: If you have corrected your details and the verification still fails, your information may be incorrect at the DHA. You might need to visit a DHA office to confirm and correct your records.
Why Your SASSA Money Is Not In
It’s frustrating when you expect a payment and it doesn’t arrive. Here are the most common reasons for a delayed or missed SASSA grant payment, along with what you should do to fix it.
Payment Has Not Been Processed Yet
SASSA payments are not all made on the same day. While the agency gives a payment week, payments are processed in batches. Your payment may simply be scheduled for a later day in that week.
- Solution: Check your SASSA status online. If it shows “Approved” for the current month and has a payment date, your money is on its way. Be patient and check your bank account again in a day or two.
Incorrect or Pending Banking Details
This is a very frequent reason for failed payments. If your bank details are incorrect or have not been verified, SASSA cannot send the money. This includes having a closed account or using a third-party account that is not in your name.
- Solution: Your SASSA status will show “Banking Details Pending” or “Failed.” Go to the official SASSA website to update or re-submit your correct bank details. Make sure the account is in your name and active.
Failed Identity Verification
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) checks your ID number and personal details against the Home Affairs database. If there is a mismatch, your application and payments will be suspended to prevent fraud.
- Solution: Your status will show “Identity Verification Failed.” You must appeal this decision on the official SASSA appeal website. If you’ve changed your name or surname, confirm your details are updated with Home Affairs.
SASSA Has Assessed You as Ineligible
Eligibility for the SRD grant is assessed monthly. If your income or assets were flagged by the system, you will be found ineligible for that month.
- Solution: Your status will be “Declined” with a specific reason like “Alternative Income Source Identified.” You can appeal this decision if you believe the assessment is incorrect.
SRD “Alternative Income Source Identified”
This is based on a means test. It indicates that SASSA has detected an income stream that disqualifies you. The “alternative” part means it could be from a source other than a regular salary, such as:
- A private pension.
- Business profits.
- Other grants.
- Maintenance payments.
- Funds received from family members.
How it works: SASSA cross-references your ID number with various databases, including:
- SARS (South African Revenue Service): To check for formal employment income.
- UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund): To see if you are receiving unemployment benefits.
- NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme): To check for student stipends.
- Banks: To check for a monthly income above the set threshold (currently R620).
The threshold: If any of these systems show a monthly income above R620, your application will be declined for that month.
What to do
- Check your status every month: The SASSA system performs a new check each month. Your status can change.
- Appeal the decision: If you believe the “Income Source Identified” status is an error, you must appeal. You can do this on the official SASSA SRD appeal website.
- Provide a valid reason: When you appeal, explain why the detected income source is incorrect (e.g., the money was a temporary deposit, or it’s an old, inactive account).
- Confirm your details: Ensure your personal and banking information is up-to-date and correct on the SASSA website. An outdated or incorrect phone number can cause issues.
